Alternative Silvicultural Systems

Authored By: D. Kennard

In recent years, alternative silvicultural systems have been proposed that modify traditional silvicultural systems to maintain more structurally complex stands. The need for alternative silvicultural systems has arisen out of two concurrent developments: the changing management objectives of the 21st century and recent scientific insights into ecosystem functions. As a result of this new knowledge, management of structurally complex stands is being developed as the primary approach to managing forests for multiple complex objectives. Proposed alternatives to conventional silvicultural systems include the use of long rotations, structural retention at the time of harvest, and silvicultural treatment of established stands to restore stand structure (structural restoration). Due to the lack of relevant scientific knowledge, these alternative techniques should be implemented using an adaptive management approach.  Treated areas should be carefully monitored to be sure that desired effects are achieved.
